The Hudson Valley Hype opened their season at home against division rivals the New York Wizards Saturday afternoon with a 122-120 win. “No NBA” is no problem for Hudson Valley, the Hype put on a show that featured their team mascot, the local championship cheer team from Pine Bush High School, music, and gift bags for kids. Oh, and let’s not forget some of the best players in NYC – on both teams – competing from tip-off to the final buzzer!
In what could easily go down as the game of they year, the Hype jumped out to an early 12 to 2 lead on the Wizards and didn’t look back thanks to the player of the game Lloyd Clinton. Lloyd finished the game with a double double consisting of 36 point and 11 rebounds. College standouts Anderson LaBase and Dominique Jones combined for 33 points. The big man Kiwan Smith had 22 from everywhere on the court and the high flying Steffon Farley ended the night with 14, but his most important two came in the closing seconds of the 4th quarter.
In a game that saw everything from blocked shots to killer crossovers to stifling defense there was still one play left in the book for the Hype to pull out. The Wizards fought off a 9 point deficit to tie the game at 120 a piece with 3.5 seconds left and an almost certain overtime coming, until a screen play was called for Steffon who received the perfect alley-oop pass for a dunk to put the Hype ahead by two. With only 1.4 seconds left in the game the Wizards were forced to launch a desperation shot from ¾ court. The Wizards top scorers were Jermaine Abraham and two time league MVP Aubin Scott with 24 and 21 respectively.
The two teams will return to action December 17 on the Wizards’ home court.
